Being an Independent Life Insurance Agent is not for everyone. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, determination and self-motivation. You don't have someone reminding you daily what you need to accomplish that day or what goals to meet. You are essentially on your own. Yes, you will likely have a Managing Agent checking in on you and making sure you are meeting certain goals and assisting you when needed...but overall you are in charge of your day to day work life.
With that said, there are SO MANY benefits to being an Independent Agent if you are willing to put in the time and effort. With today's technology, a lot of agents are able to work from home and make a rather nice income. With most carriers today, you can write policies using an E-Application or a telephone application while making calls to your potential clients from your home or office.
Most Independent Agents are essentially their own boss. You don't have anyone setting your daily routine, checking in on you, or setting your schedule. You can make your own schedule, work the hours you want to, and take off when you want to. This is especially good for parents of school-aged kids as you can take the time off to go to their various school events and work around their schedule as needed. However, you still have to push yourself to work a full 8 hour day which sometimes means working later into the evening if you have to take off. If you aren't working a full 8 hours, you are just cutting yourself short on the amount of money you could make in a day. So PUSH YOURSELF!
Speaking of money...there is no cap on the amount of money you could make as an Independent Agent. Sure, that means you have to get out there and bust your tail...especially in the beginning years. But your income will build more and more every year as your client base begins to build. The more policies you have on the books, the more residual income you will make each year. The money-making potential is endless.
Freedom. One thing I have always loved most about being an Independent Agent is the freedom to get out of the office itself and go out and sale! I loved driving to new places, meeting new people, building relationships with new clients that I would actually meet face-to-face. I think there is no better way to build a lasting relationship with a client than to meet with them in their home and get to know them. Let them see your face. Let them put a name to your face. Let them see that you are a REAL person and that they are a REAL person to you as well. Sitting behind a desk can get monotonous and boring for a lot of people. But the ability to cut that cord from the desk and the phone is so nice for an Independent Agent.
